Hunza, known for its resilience and natural beauty, is now the center of an escalating protest against prolonged electricity outages during the harsh winter season. Braving the coldest days of January, men and women from the region have gathered outside Aliabad, demanding their basic rights, including consistent electricity supply.
The protest, now entering its fifth consecutive day, has gained momentum as a significant number of women joined the sit-in today, amplifying the calls for justice and fair treatment. The situation has highlighted the dire conditions faced by the residents of Hunza, where electricity shortages have disrupted daily life, leaving people struggling to survive the extreme winter cold.
“We Will Not End Our Protest Until Our Demands Are Met“
The demonstrators have vowed to continue their peaceful protest until the government takes concrete action to address their grievances. Speaking to the media, one of the protestors stated, “We are not asking for luxuries; we are asking for our basic rights. Electricity is essential, especially in this freezing weather. If our demands are not fulfilled, we will not leave.”
Severe Water Shortages Hindering Electricity Generation
According to the Department of Electricity, the crisis stems from a severe water shortage caused by frozen streams and rivers. The frozen water channels have significantly reduced the capacity of hydropower generation, which is the primary source of electricity in the region. The department claims that all available power is being distributed to the public, but the demand far exceeds the supply.
Protests Impact Regional Transport and Trade
The ongoing protest has also had a significant impact on trade and transportation in the region. The Karakoram Highway has remained blocked for five days, causing massive disruptions in the movement of goods. Container trucks bringing goods from China are stranded, forming long queues along the highway. Drivers have expressed frustration but also stand in solidarity with the protestors, stating, “The people of Hunza have valid demands. If the government listens to them, this protest will end, and we can continue our journey.”
Community Unites in Solidarity
This protest has showcased the unity and resilience of the Hunza community. Women, men, and even children have joined hands to demand better living conditions. Their voices echo a broader sentiment felt across the region—that the government needs to prioritize the welfare of its people.
Government Response Needed
The government now faces mounting pressure to take immediate action. Residents are calling for sustainable solutions to the electricity crisis and are urging authorities to ensure that basic rights are upheld. The situation in Hunza serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by remote regions and the importance of infrastructure development to support these communities.
The eyes of the nation are now on Hunza, as its people continue their struggle for justice and dignity, hoping their voices will not go unheard.
