Location and geography of Hunza Valley

Hunza Valley is a beautiful and picturesque region located in the northernmost part of Pakistan, in the Gilgit-Baltistan region. The valley is situated at an altitude of approximately 2,438 meters (8,000 feet) above sea level and is surrounded by some of the highest mountains in the world, including Rakaposhi, Ultar Sar, and Hunza Peak.

The Hunza River, which flows through the valley, is a tributary of the Indus River and is a vital source of water for the region. The river originates from the Khunjerab Pass, which is the highest border crossing between Pakistan and China.

Hunza Valley is about 100 kilometers (62 miles) long and is divided into three main regions: Upper Hunza (also known as Gojal), Central Hunza (also known as Aliabad), and Lower Hunza. Each of these regions has its unique geography, culture, and traditions.

Upper Hunza is located at the northernmost part of the valley and borders China’s Xinjiang province. The region is known for its high mountain peaks, glaciers, and pristine lakes, including the famous Attabad Lake, which was formed in 2010 after a massive landslide blocked the Hunza River. The lake has now become a popular tourist attraction in the region.

Central Hunza is the most developed part of the valley and is home to the largest town in the region, Karimabad. The town is located at the foot of the Baltit Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most prominent landmarks in the valley. Central Hunza is also known for its orchards, which produce some of the best apricots in the world.

Lower Hunza is the southernmost part of the valley and is known for its fertile agricultural land, where locals grow wheat, maize, and other crops. The region is also home to several historic sites, including the Altit Fort, which is believed to date back to the 11th century.

Hunza Valley’s location and geography make it a unique and breathtaking destination for tourists and nature lovers. The high mountains, glaciers, and lakes offer stunning views and opportunities for trekking, hiking, and other adventure sports. The fertile land and abundant water supply provide a favorable environment for agriculture, which has been the mainstay of the local economy for centuries. Overall, the location and geography of Hunza Valley make it one of the most beautiful and enchanting places in the world.
