The United Nations Secretary-General has expressed profound sadness at the passing of His Highness the Aga Khan IV, remembering him as a global spiritual leader, philanthropist, and advocate for peace, development, and pluralism.

“For decades, the Aga Khan dedicated his life to improving the quality of life for millions, particularly in vulnerable communities, through his unwavering commitment to humanitarian work, education, and cultural preservation,” the Secretary-General stated.

Beyond his role as the 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, the Aga Khan was a bridge-builder between cultures and faiths, promoting dialogue, mutual understanding, and respect in an increasingly interconnected world. His contributions to poverty alleviation, gender equality, and sustainable development left an indelible mark on the global community.

The United Nations also recognized his efforts in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and acknowledged the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) as a critical partner in tackling some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

The Secretary-General extended his deepest condolences to the Aga Khan’s family, the global Ismaili community, and all those touched by his leadership and compassion.

End of an Era: His Highness the Aga Khan IV Passes Away at 88

The Diwan of the Ismaili Imamat has officially announced the passing of His Highness Mawlana Shah Karim Al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, in Lisbon, Portugal, at the age of 88.

Ascending to the Imamat at just 20 years old, His Highness devoted over six decades to the spiritual and material upliftment of his community and humanity at large.

As the Founder and Chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), he led one of the world’s largest private development organizations, pioneering transformative initiatives in education, healthcare, economic development, and cultural preservation. Under his leadership, AKDN grew to employ over 80,000 people worldwide, improving the lives of millions, particularly in some of the world’s most underserved regions.

His passing marks the end of an era of visionary leadership and humanitarian impact.

Succession and Funeral Arrangements

According to Shia Ismaili tradition, the succession of the Imam is determined through the process of Nass (designation). The name of the new Hazar Imam (living Imam) will be formally announced after His Highness’s will is read to his close family members and senior leaders of the global Ismaili Jamat, as stated in the official press release.
