Sadia Bano brings new ideas for farmers to manage pre-and post-harvest losses in agriculture, Hunza. She aimed to help underprivileged women farmers who are also suffering from the impact of COVID-19

To: Director Agriculture Department
Pakistan

I am Sadia Bano, a highly motivated individual with a real desire to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable sectors of society. Presently, I am looking for an opportunity to utilize my experience in agriculture.

I studied pre-and post-harvest management in agriculture. It was tough traveling hundreds of kilometers, notwithstanding the hurdles of social and family difficulties. Nevertheless, I finally completed my degree. Right after graduation, COVID-19 hit the world, crashing the job market badly.

Amidst the crisis, I volunteered to conduct a household profiling for a farmers’ organization for six months, pro bono. While working as an intern, I realized my potential in agriculture, not to mention my degree. I started with organic and traditional agriculture practices including pruning and grafting while doing some pre-harvest management in view of protecting the trees.

One major farmers’ issue in my village is pre-and post-harvest losses especially for fresh fruits – reaching up to 40% specifically for apricots. Having an academic background on this issue, I started working on means to minimize the pre-and post-harvest losses. I visited every household and share knowledge with them on simple yet effective methods.

Through this letter, I am appealing to the Agriculture Department for support such as access to projects that would expand my initiative on educating the farmers on pre-and post-harvest management. This will help underprivileged women farmers who are also suffering from the impact of COVID-19.

It is my honor to request assistance because I believe that this will benefit women and men farmers, their families, and society.

Motor Bike accident took the life of innocent Old person in Garelth Hunza

0

Hunza:  It was about 9 pm at night, a motorbike cyclist has hit Ashiq Hussain age 61, a resident of Garelth Hunza. He was crossing the road and the motorbike was very fast without a headlight and the man was crossing the road near the GBPWD office. He was seriously injured and was shifted to Govt. Hospital Gilgit, where his last breath has stoped its function. The locals are demanding from district administration to take serious action on it so that to avoid future accidents.

Due to bad driving practices by untrained and unskilled drivers. Many accidents have taken over Hunza. In recent days two people lost their life in Garelth Hunza by road accidents. The district administration is doing nothing against it but they only passed RIP comments. law and order should be strict to save lives in the future. There need to be proper planning and need of the hour to take action against the culprits of such road accident. This issue needs to take seriously so that From Gainsh Bridge to Hassanabad Bridge, there should be strict traffic rules. Many precious people in the past have lost their lives in this area of the road. The main reasons for accidents are wrong parking, lack of parking, damp of raw material on roadsides, construction work, canals, without light vehicles at night, over speed in population area, ignorance of traffic rules, unfit vehicles and etc.

GLACIAL LAKE OUTBURST FLOOD GLOF-II

Scaling-up of Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) risk reduction in Northern Pakistan

Glacial Lake Outburst Floods

A Glacial Lake Outburst Flood, or GLOF, is sudden release of water from a lake fed by glacier melt that has formed at the side, in front, within, beneath, or on the surface of a glacier.

Due to rising temperatures, glaciers in Pakistan’s northern mountain ranges (the Hindu Kush, Himalayas and Karakorum) are melting rapidly and a total of 3,044 glacial lakes have developed in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). Of these, 33 glacial lakes have been assessed to be prone to hazardous glacial lake outburst flooding (GLOF). GLOF are sudden events which can release millions of cubic metres of water and debris, leading to the loss of lives, property and livelihoods amongst remote and impoverished mountain communities. Over 7.1 million people in GB and KP are vulnerable; in these areas, 26.7 percent and 22 percent of the population, respectively, are below the poverty line.

The Scaling-up of GLOF risk reduction in Northern Pakistan (GLOF-II) project is a continuation of the four-year ‘Reducing Risks and Vulnerabilities from GLOF in Northern Pakistan’ (GLOF-I) project. GLOF-I helped vulnerable communities prepare for and mitigate GLOF risks through early warning systems, enhanced infrastructure and community-based disaster risk management.

Mountain regions are at the front line of climate change. Disturbances in hydrology disrupt their lives. High altitudes permit only single cropping, and if there is insufficient water, the cropping season is impacted, which in turn forces the community to buy grains from the market. This is a common challenge in the community with poor households more acutely hit by water scarcity.

Life for women and men was getting more difficult by the day, and mired in a poverty trap, there was little that they could do to change their lives. The cycle of poverty was taking its toll on women and girl child education, as more girls were kept at home to help with mounting water related chores.

Reducing Glacier Lake Outburst Flood Risks in Northern Pakistan

The project will build 250 engineering structures including damns, ponds, spill ways, tree plantation and drainage to reduce risk. At the same time, the development of disaster management policies and the introduction of weather monitoring stations, flood gauges, hydrological modelling and early warning systems will increase the ability to respond rapidly to flood scenarios.

The project has an estimated lifespan of 15 years.

Clean and safe Drinking water is the right of every citizen of any nation.

Hunza Community is compelled to drink contaminated water

The district administration(GB Government-Pakistan Government) has failed to deliver its services for its citizens. Safe and clean drinking water is the right of each individual and it’s also mentioned in Pakistan law as well. Many projects were postponed due to bad political, religious interference and inadequate funds. The too much formality system in government offiles makes dificult for citizens to understand any project.

It has been more than 10+ years that Ganish community is compelled to drink contaminated water. You may have a question that How water pollution takes place in Hunza? There has been researched on Hunza water at the international level. You can find authentic information on the internet. It is true that Hunza people were living more than 100+ ages back to some years but now that time has completed changed now the average age of Hunza people fall below 90. These drastic changes are due to many factors. It is not possible to mention all those factors here. One of the main factors is Water. Many people suffer from typhoid and other diseases. The Hospitals are full of water-borne diseases. In some cases, these diseases convert into cancer.

Ganish Hunza, is the oldest settlement of the state HUNZA. It dated back to more than 1000 years old. The main roots of Hunza community are originated from GANISH and spread across HUNZA. The Ganish include:

Main Ganish, Buldas, shuknoshal, Chobikusal, Chill Ganish, Garelth and Mominabad

The territory of Ganish Starts from the middle of Attaabad lake finished at Sheraz,Hyderabad. It also connects Karimabad at zero point Hunza and Altit at Altit bridge. Ganish is the biggest village of Hunza according to its area. The diverse people of faith live here. Dated back to 1000 years, many migrants from different parts of the world especially Iran, China, Albina, Macedonia and etc, came over here and settled. Hunza became the biggest migrants hub at that time. Hunza used to be an independent state, it had its own king system. The king system has never been good for any nation in history. As you have seen that how downfall has happened to many kings. The kings were treating people as a servant. The freedom of people was captured by kings. Similarly, it happens in Hunza. In 1975, the Hunza state merge with Pakistan under specified UN Conditions. It is still disputed territory. Pakistan didn’t fully recognize GB so that we don’t have any representatives in Pakistan national assembly.

Hunza Water

The above picture has been taken by (Abbas) an environmentalist and socialists individual. Glass 1 has filtered from the water of Glass 3 and 2. I have to install a filtered project at home with a very simple method and at a cheap price. It has cost me USD 200. As it is not a sustainable solution and this will only affordable by middle-class people but what about lower-class families. who directly use unclean tap water. Those people even don’t have any facilities. They are looking for a blessing and miracles. Some were looking towards the government and some are waiting for international projects but the time of waiting has been so long and didn’t respond to anything.

There is one project, which was built with the funded by the international community and the project was hand over to the district administration. The Hunza community has benefited from it for many years and due to zero maintenance by the district administration, this project become failed. This project was limited to a small area but due to population explosion and building of new commercial buildings including many hotels. The project becomes insufficient.

Causes of water polltion in Hunza:

Hunza water is coming from glaciers and mostly the water is press and cleans at its origin. The water channel pass-through from cultivated land, houses, roads, gardens, etc. During its passing through wastewater from these sources mixed with channel water and make it contaminated.

Second reason is ,the water bring its self too much sand, which cause pollution.

Third, there are environmental issues that make Hunza water contaminated. Due to the over-harvesting of natural plants, floods, and other calamities appear in society.

What is the solution?

The district administration should work on community development projects without political and religious interference. The district administration should visit the area regularly to observed the issues.

The government should make separate channels for wastewater besides clean water channels so that they don’t mix with each other.

The impurities could be filter easily by putting water on standby or to make traditional filter method.

Comments:

Instead of depending on foreign aids, the district administartion and community should utilize the resources to make the best out of it and to provide the proper solutions. In Hunza, mostly the Ismaili community and 10 % of Shina live here. They are hidden religious factors that make the Hunza backward from development. People have hate for each other inside, they don’t express but they do in other forms. The district administration sitting on their comfort tables and waiting for the upper class to come and discuss any issue.

Note: It has published with personal experienced and observance in the area. This article may not hurt an individual view or any idea. After you reading this article on Issue of Water in Hunza, feel free to drop your idea ,suggestion, solution or any comment in below. Thanks for reading!

Eid al-Fitr has been celebrated Peacefully across the Globe

0

Eid al-Fitr, also known as‎‎ “festival of breaking of the fast”, is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide that marks the end of Ramadan. The holiday celebrates the conclusion of the 29 or 30 days of dawn-to-sunset fasting of Ramadan.
The date for the start of any lunar Hijri month varies based on when the new moon is sighted by local religious authorities, so the day of celebration varies by locality. The holiday is known under various other names in different languages and countries around the world.

Eid al-Fitr

Eid al-Fitr has a particular salat (Islamic prayer) that consists of two rakats (units) generally performed in an open field or large hall. It may only be performed in congregation (jamāʿat) and features six additional Takbirs (raising of the hands to the ears while saying “Allāhu ʾAkbar”, meaning “God is the greatest”) in the Hanafi school of Sunni Islam: three at the start of the first rakat and three just before rukūʿ in the second rakat.Other Sunni schools usually have twelve Takbirs, similarly split in groups of seven and five. In Shia Islam, the salat has six Takbirs in the first rakat at the end of qira’a, before rukūʿ, and five in the second. Depending on the juristic opinion of the locality, this salat is either farḍ فرض (obligatory), mustaḥabb (strongly recommended) or mandūb مندوب (preferable). After the salat, Muslims would celebrate the Eid al-Fitr in various ways with food (“Eid cuisine”) being a central theme, which also gives the holiday the nickname Sweet Eid or Sugar Feast.

History of Hunza Valley

0

Hunza is a mountainous valley in the autonomous Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan. Hunza is
situated in the northern part of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, bordering with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to the west and the Xinjiang region of China to the north-east. The Hunza valley is situated at an
elevation of 2,438 meters and total area is 11,660 km2 (4,500 sq mi).

History of Hunza
History of Hunza

Geologically, Hunza comprises of three parts, Upper Hunza (Gojal), Central Hunza and Lower
Hunza (“Shinaki”).

About Hunza People

The local dialects spoken incorporate Burushaski, Wakhi and Shina. The education pace of the
Hunza valley is over 95%. The chronicled space of Hunza and present northern Pakistan has
had, throughout the long term, mass movements, clashes and resettling of clans and
nationalities, of which the Dardic Shina race is the most conspicuous in territorial history.
Individuals of the locale have related their veriable customs down the ages. The Hunza Valley
is likewise home to some Wakhi, who relocated there from northeastern Afghanistan starting in
the nineteenth century onwards.
The life span of Hunza individuals has been noted by a few, however others discredit this as a
life span fantasy brought about by the absence of birth records. There is no proof that Hunza
future is altogether over the normal of poor, detached locales of Pakistan. Cases of wellbeing
and long life were quite often dependent on the proclamations by the local mir (ruler).
